Corona impeachment: The late Philippine Senate

Day 1 of the impeachment trial and the senators were late.

The 2.00 p.m. schedule was not followed as the senators started filing into the hall at 2.11 p.m.

Senator Edgardo Angara recited the opening prayer. PRAYER? Tsk tsk. Even the practice of swearing a witness by having him place his hand on the Bible should be declared unconstitutional.

And what’s with the purple robes?

On the background, commentary was provided by former UP Law Dean Raul Pangalangan and former Supreme Court Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban. One of them said — don’t know which — that the purple robes were for dramatization as the senators are not required by law to don any special attire. Soooo… the senators had to spend taxpayers’ money for dramatic effect?
